It took me this long to find out that there was a foundation in Connecticut. I'm not sure why I didn't know about them but I am glad I found them.

5 things you should know when you go to the hospital.

The power of the patient remains and knowing how to use your power is the key to transitioning through the healthcare system; knowing your care options and collaborating with the team that is around you is what will make your stay less stressful. You have a name. Right from the start request that everyone call you by your name. Not sweetie , dear or honey.Know your caregivers and providers. Request that all who come to see you write their name down and their role. Write it so you can read it. You also want their contact information. A phone number or beeper.Know your information. Bring a folder with you to put your information in. Request a copy of your labs and other results on a daily basis. It is accessible on the unit and easily printed for you. Remember it is YOUR information and you have a right to it. Do not accept that you have to wait until you leave and go to medical records to obtain and I might add have to pay for it. That's nonsense. It's a control that hospitals have on your information that is illegal. They will use HIPAA regulations as their excuse. It is correct that they are obligated to protect your information but not protect it from YOU the patient. It's nonsenseAsk about your medications. Every time you are given a medication ask for information on the medication. Ask for a copy of your medications. Again you have a right to this information in writing. Put it in a folder with your other information.When anyone comes into your room to speak with you about your care ask them to sit down. Yes sit down and talk. When groups of physicians or providers come in and stand over you it is a power over affect and causes you to be intimidated. If at least one if not all can sit down and have a discussion it will bring you to be more comfortable to ask the right questions that come to you.Your have the right to information and to be a part of your care. Why does anyone need an advocate?

Advocacy has been around for a long time in education. No one is surprised when a family hires an advocate to help them with their child in the school system. Yet when a private advocate shows up in the hospital there appears to be fear.


Non profit hospitals receive many different amenities for their status of non profit. Recently there has been discussion on why the salaries and bonus' are so high


What is "Patient Engagement", we see the term everywhere now and there are even people with the title of Patient Engagement Director or Manager. So exactly what are they looking for the hospitals to prove to them??
